Thanksgiving in Chicago {The Fall Chronicles}

This year for Thanksgiving I took my kids and went with my mom to Chicago. My oldest brother and his family live there and we thought it would be a nice little change. Michael wasn't actually able to get the days he needed off work so he had to stay home.

I expected it to be a nice, relaxing time but it was actually very opposite. Conrad decided to stop sleeping at night and cut his very first tooth while we were there. He was very clingy and fussy. The last night we were there, he woke up around 12 times at night. Needless to say, I was exhausted. Hanley was also not herself during our visit. My niece and nephew are a few years older than her but they play well together. Hanley just had meltdown after meltdown, not listening and just being defiant all around. She wasn't eating correctly and certainly not getting enough sleep at night (with no naps either).

The actual Thanksgiving meal was fantastic and so yummy! Regardless of how my kids acted and the fact that it caused me to never want to go further than 30 minutes away from home for a long time, it was a good trip visiting with my family.

Egg Intolerance and an ER visit {Conrad}

My poor baby boy! Last Monday morning I woke up and made us (me, Hanley, and Conrad) scrambled eggs for breakfast. I had previously read on a website I frequent for homemade baby food recipes that it was fine to start feeding eggs at 6 months old due to new research done. Cool, another easy option and I like when he eats what we eat because it obviously just makes it easier.

We were meeting my mother in law for lunch 30 minutes away so we started getting ready for the day. About an hour & a half to 2 hours after we ate, we were all ready to go and getting coats on when I was holding Conrad and he literally vomited all over the floor. It was like a grown man had vomited. I got his mouth cleaned up and luckily the way I was holding him it missed us both and only hit the floor. I thought maybe it was a fluke or he was vomiting up the teething tablets I just given him. I didn't know but I went ahead and put him in his car seat to go. I cleaned up the floor and no sooner, he vomited again, projectile style, all over himself and his car seat.

Thank God, that at that moment Michael walked in the door for his lunch break. I had him call his mom to cancel our date and I unstrapped Conrad to bring him to the bathtub to clean him up and give him a nap since he hadn't had his usual morning nap that day. On our way up the stairs, he vomited again - and in that moment I knew something certainly wasn't right.
I gave him a quick bath and started putting clean pajamas on him. By this time, Conrad was so lethargic he would go limp and fall asleep sitting up. Michael and Hanley were upstairs by now and Michael was in contact with his best friend that's a nurse. He vomited again, into a towel and luckily my mother in law was already on her way to our house to help us if we needed.

We called the pediatrician but they were on their lunch break and wouldn't be back for another 30 minutes. We decided we needed to take him to the hospital but I wasn't exactly sure the best way to go about getting him there. He had vomit all over his car seat and he was still vomiting so my first thought was to either call an ambulance or hold him in the back seat. Michael talked me out of holding him so we made our way back downstairs and once we knew my mother in law was close by to stay with Hanley, I strapped him back into his half cleaned car seat. We live no more than 10 minutes from the children's hospital but he still vomited twice on the ride there and started choking both times so I had to pop the back of his seat out of the base to prop him up further to help him.

I just kept thinking he was having an allergic reaction to the eggs but kept weighing all the possible culprits to the vomiting. Was it a virus that hit him abruptly? The flu (but he has already had his first half of the flu shot)? Did he swallow something small when I wasn't looking and this was his body trying to rid a foreign object out? He didn't have a fever, wasn't really crying or fussy, just vomiting with occasional lethargy (also due to a missed nap).

The ER was packed with patients and it felt like we had to wait awhile. Once we were initially seen for them to take his temperature they put us higher on the list of importance because of his age (6 months) and number of times he had already vomited. They were guessing he had a medical issue called intussusception (in-tuh-suh-SEP-shun). Intussusception is a serious disorder in which part of the intestine slides into an adjacent part of the intestine. Instead of allowing food to go down, it creates a block and makes everything come back up. The ER doctor said they see at least one case of this disorder in young infants a day. It made sense even though I wasn't convinced and I found it weird no one asked me what he had to eat so far that day so I offered up the information and the fact he had eggs. The doctor brushed off my theory of an egg allergy because he wasn't showing any typical signs of an allergy.

Once we were in a room, the nurse started an IV in his foot to administer fluids and give him some nausea medicine. He vomited upwards of 20 times in 2 hours until the nausea medicine kicked in. They did an x-ray, an ultrasound, a catheter for a urine sample and ultimately came back saying they couldn't find a thing wrong with him so they just blamed a virus.

I was not buying that diagnosis at all!

We finally made it back home around 6pm that night and I kept racking my brain trying to figure out what was wrong with him. After doing my own research, it hit me: Conrad had an intolerance to egg, not an egg allergy.

Allergies and intolerances are easily confused. Babies can sometimes have an intolerance to certain foods, but this is different from an allergy, because it doesn't involve the immune system. Your baby has an intolerance if he has difficulty digesting certain food, resulting in stomach pain, colic, bloating, gas, diarrhea, and vomiting.

I was upset about our entire day wasted at the ER but I would have never decided to not bring him because he needed the medicine and fluids regardless of the diagnosis. And according to a friend that's an ER nurse, they typically look for acute and life-threatening issues so they probably wouldn't have dug deeper or research it like I did.

I don't have an actual diagnosis from a doctor but I'm 99.9% certain that was the issue and it will be a long time before he tries eggs again because that was so miserable. I just wish I would have mentioned egg intolerance to the ER doctor when we were still in the hospital and heard what she thought of that. I will talk to his pediatrician at his next doctors appointment it all.

He was fine by the time we left the hospital, and was completely fine the next day too...I'm just so glad he is better and it wasn't anything serious.

7 Months Old {Conrad}

I feel like I just blinked and this sweet little boy is already 7 months old. I think teeth are on the horizon, although it seems like his drool is slowing down some. He loves watching Hanley and has belly laughed at Chunk (dog). This month had many firsts!

Size
He is 18lbs and wearing some 3-6 month, 6 month, and 6-9 month clothing. Wearing a size 3 diaper.

Eyes & Teeth
Eyes are a beautiful crystal blue. He has been working on his first tooth for what seems like too long. I can now see white under the gum so I'm really hoping it pops through any day!

Hair
Blonde and super soft. It seems to be a tad longer on the sides than on top and its so cute.

Sleep
I'm just plain exhausted. I'm really hoping his sleep gets better after he cuts his first tooth. His sleep isn't getting any better and is still pretty bad at night since 5 months. I started a bedtime routine with a bath, books, and nursing but it doesn't matter, it still takes upwards of 2 hours to get him to stay asleep. I am wondering if he is having separation issues at night that are causing him to not be able to sleep?? I just don't know.
Napping 2-3 times a day for around an hour or sometimes more (if I can get him to stay asleep).

Diet
Nursing and feeding 2-3 times a day. He usually gets cereal/oatmeal once a day and whatever else I can find. He doesn't seem to be fond of avocado anymore, or bananas. Didn't care for oranges either-too tart I guess.
I also made an entire bag of sweet potatoes and fed him a serving of them but later that same day, he just screamed from belly pain and gas. I don't plan on feeding any more of them to him, unfortunately (because I now have a ton in the freezer) but I should've known better since Hanley was the same way when fed sweet potatoes.
He really seems to love his cereal and I remember I stopped feeding it to Hanley by this point because she just didn't seem interested in it after she got a taste of yummy foods.
Found out he has an intolerance to eggs - more on that in the next post.

Milestones
Took a bath in the regular bath without the bumbo (27wks)! He keeps such good balance in the water and loves being in there with his sister playing with the toys! I try to give Hanley some time in the bath alone for the first 5-10 minutes and Conrad always crawls over to the side of the tub and stands up to watch her.

He started signing "more" consistently around 28 weeks but at the end of 6 months it was very hit or miss on him doing it so I'm still working with him.
He also started standing up in his own crib at 28 weeks.

Likes
He started banging all toys on the ground when he would play with them (27wks) which is super cute!
He started paying more attention to the tv when cartoons are on around 28 weeks.

Dislikes
Being put down if he is tired.

  • First ear infection & antibiotics - I was wondering if he had an ear infection because each time I layed him down to sleep, he would cry. He had a doctor appointment to get him checked out because he had a fever for 2 days and our regular doc wasn't in so we had to be seen by a float doctor. She looked in both ears and said they were normal. Then 2 days later, he actually had his 6 month well check up and our regular doctor checked his ears and she said he definitely had an ear infection, and it wasn't new, it had been there, so that other doctor couldn't have known what she was looking at and I will opt to avoid her in the future.
  • First Halloween - he was a spider once and also a peapod once. You can also read about our Halloween on this post.
  • Celebrated his 1/2 birthday.
  • Got another cold.
  • Tried a few nights of CIO with no success.

Happy Halloween {The Fall Chronicles}

Halloween around here, Ohio, can be hit or miss with the weather. For the last two years, the actual day of Halloween was rainy. Who wants to walk around trick or treating when its cold, yucky, and rainy; am I right!? So for this reason, and because I'm into making my little girl smile (and my husband a little crazy) I had us booked for nearly an entire week straight with various trick or treating, just in case Halloween came around and the weather was too yucky and we missed out all together.

We attended our local zoo's Boo at the Zoo which is always fun. We also went to the mall when they had a trick or treating event and 3 different neighborhood trick or treats (on different days).

I started asking Hanley in the beginning of October what she wanted to be for Halloween, on purpose, in case she flip flopped on her decision. Every time I would ask her, her answer was always Elsa. OK, I can deal with an Elsa, if that's what she wanted - and she told me that for a solid 3 weeks. Then a little over a week before Halloween, she came running to me and said "mom, I want to be a vampire! The most scary vampire in the whole entire world!" Then I started asking her daily and from them on it was always a vampire.

Conrad had a peapod costume and also a spider costume.

Hanleys Haircut

Back in the beginning of October I started thinking it would be a good idea to cut Hanleys hair cut. Her hair was half way down her back but it was very uneven, thin, and stringy. I was going to leave it long until after Halloween since she originally said she wanted to be Elsa. After Halloween I mentioned it to her and she was surprisingly ALL for it! She kept saying she wanted her hair shorter than mine, and mine is a couple inches past my shoulders. I looked up the closest kids hair salon and off we went. She sat like a little angel in the chair and followed the stylists instructions and loved it when it was all done! I was a little afraid I would regret cutting her hair terribly after it was all said and done but I'm ok. I'm glad we did it, it will grow so fast and it's only hair!

Conrad's HALF Birthday

Just the sweetest boy! Even while sick, he just has the sweetest demeanor.

Size
Almost 17 pounds and wearing 3 month - 6 month clothing. He's in a size 2 diaper - soon moving to a size 3.

Eyes
Still blue

Hair
So super blonde that he actually has more than it appears because it's so light. I absolutely love rubbing his soft downy head!

Sleep
Oh my goodness: the entire last month of sleep has been horrendous! Completely and utterly exhaustng! Waaay worse than him as a newborn, eh! I was sick, then Hanley got sick, which got me sick again, and Conrad got sick, then I got a sinus infection, and now he currently has an ear infection. Oh fun! So that definitely had to attribute to so many wakings during the night between both kids. He used to sleep so good at night, it has to get better sometime soon right!?

Diet
Breastmilk, cereal, and purees. I actually have given him some puffs and yogurt melts, not many and not often, I just can't figure out if he likes them or not - he makes all sorts of funky faces but keeps eating them.

Milestones
Signed 'dadda' and 'milk' for the first time during 24 weeks.

Before crawling, to get around (24 wks) he would start sitting on his butt, go into a crawling stance on his hands and knees and kind of pivot around back to his butt. He started crawling at the tail end of 5 months (25 weeks) - it's the absolute cutest, he crawls on one foot while using the opposite knee.

He pulled himself up to a standing position in Hanley's crib at 23 weeks. He hasn't pulled himself up in his own crib, I'm assuming because the slats are smaller and round and he is able to grab onto them because the slats in his own crib are wide and more rectangle in shape.

At the beginning of 5 months (22 weeks) he was able to go from belly to almost able to sit up unassisted but he didn't know how to push one of his arms up further and so he would just end up leaning on one of his arms. Then at 23 weeks he finally mastered sitting up from a laying down position with no problems.

He likes his momma, likes watching his sister and playing with her toys. He also likes to steal little sips of my water, it's so cute - he does this little grunt if I drink water and he wants a sip.

Dislikes
Being tired.

Hanley's 3rd Birthday

WOW. Where has the time gone. It's every saying and cliche in the book, where has my baby girl gone??

For Hanley's birthday this year, we decided to rent Outback Ray and his amazing animal show. I pretty much kept the rest of the party and decorations more low key since I wanted the main focus to be on the animal show.

Over last winter we had been following Outback Ray to various places around our city because we enjoyed his animal show so much. We started to become a familiar face to him and thought it would be so fun to book him for her party.

He has so many great animals and everyone gets to touch them all. He keeps it interesting and fun for the kids (ok, the adults too, who am I kidding!). Unfortunately, he broke his arm right before the party and had to have his wife help him out.

I printed on these paper bags for the kids to hold their pinata candy

I used Kraft paper to cover some of the tables and I thought that was very fitting for the "Outback" theme. I got paper bags from the grocery store and created "outback/safari vests". I found a free printable for "jungle safari passes" from this blog that I attached string to and the kids wore around their necks. I also created binoculars out of empty toilet paper rolls and duck tape.

Hanley had the best time at her birthday party and I would bet her most favorite part was her turtle pinata (that she pronounced ee-otta) and talked about it for weeks afterward.
